A: West Vancouver man

has been remanded until

January 18 for trial on a
charge of raping a 36-year-
old North Vancouver
woman.

Dudley Samuda, aged 49,
is alleged to have raped the
woman August 10: and was
remanded when he appeared
in provincial court in West
Vancouver.

Police allege he met the

victim the same evening and —

took her to an isolated part

Monday . night’s. .council
meeting, despite the fact
that North Van District

District aldermen ~~ visited
City council in person two
weeks ago, in an un-
precedented attempt to turn
Rufus Drive intoaculdesac.

Residents of the eastern
end of 16th Street and
Casano Drive (in the
District) want to barricade
their roads in order to block
an expected heavy flow of
traffic into the City’s new
Lynn Triangle development.

The City-District boun-
dary runs along these streets
and Rufus Drive.

_ Although City council
voted to impose a 30
kilometre ‘an hour speed
limit on Rufus Drive, the
majority of council felt it-
would be illogical to block
the street off.

favour of barricading the
road.

Alderman Colcleugh said
he failed to see why the
District considered the issue
so important, and said he
would support the cul de sac
‘because “it would smooth
future relationships with the
District.” -

“We should be looking at a
coordinated planning ap-
proach,” Alderman Cross
said, and added that he felt
the City would be acting ona
“selfish basis” if it. ignored
the District's request.

“There is an important .
relationship... between. two.
_ communities sharing = the
same. geography,” ‘Alderman >
Payne said, and added that it
was “important the City and
the District remain the best
of friends.”

“Sometime in the future ...
this council could haye
something it desperately -
wants and it will appear
before the District ... they
will turn us down,” he said,
adding that he was very
impressed with the District

Council concluded that
while no barriers will be put
up now, the matter will be
reconsidered in a year.
