Let’s talk about passpors!
The day I received my first
passport is right on the top of
the list of ‘“‘red letter days’’
such as graduation, wed-
ding, first baby, and so on.
What a lovely document to
own! All those nice blank
pages I hoped to fill with

stamps from foreign govern- —

ments - and did! I felt that
the government had person-
singled me out as

they. did,. considering all the

rigmarole I went through to

get this piece of cardboard.
~How does the average
Canadian apply for a pass-

port? Start with a trip to your -

local post office for

adult ‘or kid’s size. Take the
form home and study it
carefully.

The first thing the govern-
ment wants from you is proof
of citizenship. Fair enough!
If you were born here, all you
need is your birth certificate,
obtainable from the capital of
the province in which you
were born if you’ve lost the
original.

possible.‘No sense delaying
the process.

Then. fixing up — your
prettiest face, head on down
to a passport photographer
for a mug shot. Don’t be too
disappointed if you come out
looking like Jack the Ripper
or Apple Annie. Fve never
met anyone yet who liked
their passport picture.

Don't get sucked in to
buying the color pictures at
more than twice the price of
black and white. Believe me,
the government officials in
Bangkok don’t give a damn.

Oddly enough, Ottawa

accepts the word of an
immediate relative as guar-
antor, which simplifies the
process in many families. A
husband can vouch for his
wife and so on.

The guarantor signs both
your form and your pictures.
After you have filled in the

documents including signed
“pictures and a_ certified
cheque or money order for
twelve dollars, everything
goes to the government.

In Vancouver, there is a
local office which will process
the whole thing in four
working days. Other larger

whole thing to Ottawa.-Use.

If you live in one of the
large centres -with. a local
office, you-may either pick up
the passport in person or
have it mailed -(registered!). I
recOmmend personal pick-up
should you be in any rush.
You never know what the
postal system has in store for
us. ; ,

For those requiring a
*‘renewal’’ of an old pass-
port, the whole process must
be repeated. No short-cuts!
Be sure to include your
expired passport with the

you as a souvenir, punched
full of holes. -

If you are planning to
travel with. children under
age 16, you have two options:
they may be included on the
passport of one parent, or
have their own.

The second option is more
expensive but I recommend

easy for thieves — keep your
passport zipped up in a

special compartment in your
purse or in an inside jacket
pocket.

In hot climates where the
men don't wear jackets,
carry a shoulder bag (camera
variety, if you’re sensitive!)
or let your wife carry yours
with hers. .

When you're registering at
a hotel, the management
usually keeps your passport
for a few hours. Don’t forget
to pick it up! Once I got into a
cab heading for the airport in
Buenos Aires and at the very
last minute remembered that
the hotel still had my
passport.. Wouldn’t I have
been in trouble trying to grab
a flight for Canada without
it?
