WHIT this country needs is more human rights. And more human rights * commissions. Aad more human rights . tribunals. And more government “meddlers telling you how to ~ act and what to say and how to say it. . Ye being such an oatish _ ignorant Jot, according to government deep thinkers. ’ On the national front, for ‘example, a recent report - from a four-member Canadian Human Rights Act :, Review Panel presents 165 ‘recommendations on how to expand human rights and Ncrease government intru- sion into social conduct. The 180-page Promoting - Equality: A New Vision has nearthed, among other hings, “systemic discrimina- tion.” - The specific stuff having “been largely removed we’re down to regarding the entire Canadian system as _- inherently discriminatory. <-There are far too many recommendations from the report to discuss in this’: ort yarns space. Suffice it to sav that each would add more fuel to the human rights fire and require more hands-on intrusion from your friendly human rights commissioners and more painful and expen- sive adjudication from . human rights tribunals. This even though those tribunals have been found to be hopelessly biased and unjust. If adopted the recom- mendations will, of coursz, require more of your tax dollars to institute and maintain. They would also increase the Canadian Human Rights Commission’s power and expand its market. As Recommendation 6 advocates, the commission should push for “.... the broadest interpretation of (its) powers and thar any decision-maker resolve any doubt about the scape of these powers in favour of the Commission.” And those powers would, according to Recommendation 73, no longer be tettered with any limits “on the amount of compensation that (human rights tribunals) can award for what we would wish to see referred to as injury to “dignity, feclings and self- respect.” Indeed, why burden your ever-loving government- appointed tribunal with any limits at all? On the complaints front, the review panel advocates proactive prospecting for the modern human rights indus- try: mobilizing community partnerships and advocacy organizations to help drum up complaints; organizing company committees to monitor human rights; set- ting up a “clinic” to help with the processing of claims. The commission ‘would continue to initiate claims without the bother of hav- - ing to have a complainant, and, even better, according lic’ Hearings are scheduled for 7:00 2M,, TUESDAY, JULY I 1, 2000 in the “Council. Or how about to the review panel's Recommendation 105, “no requirement for identifiable victims” co launch a claim. All this on the under- standing that “government provide sufficient resources to ensure that all claimants receive Jegal assistance at public expense.” But how about product? To keep the wheels of the complaint industry spinning, we'll need a wider scope of complaints eligible for tri- bunal adjudication. Not to worry: the review panel’s all over that one.
