Punk music erupted cate the British Music scene in the mid-
“70s, powered by a raw energy that cut through everything in its
way. The sharp edge of the assault was the Sex Pistols, with their
outrageous performances and rabid fans. Along with bands like
the Clash, the Buzzcocks, the Damned, they shook up the status
quo and created a new genre.

A twelve-inch by twelve-inch canvas was a perfect medium for
a new cast of artists. Their work became inscandy connected to
the music inside. Sgt. Peppers, Dark Side of the Moon, Breakfast in
America, you have only to say the title and the music springs to
mind and with it comes the image of the album cover.

Storm Thorgerson and Aubrey Powell together created some
of the most memorable covers
under the name Hipgnosis, and
have combined to produce this col-
lection.

Any best-of compilation is a sub-
jective statement and this one is no
different. What is presented in the
book are 100 examples of great
design work, art that is bound into
our collective memory.

Each album cover shown is
accompanied by background details
on its release, the artist who created
it, influences and often, stories of

the controversy they caused. The Andy Warhol-designed cover
for the Rolling Stones’ Sticky Fingers album is here, so are several
works by artist Neon Park, and a number of banned covers, such
as Roxy Music’s Conntry Life and Two Virgins by John Lennon
and Yoko Ono. They all have a story and that’s what makes the
bock a treasure. Combined they provide a cross section of a spe-
cialized art form that is still growing, but in the smaller CD for-

mat.

Lions Gate book wins award

LIONS Gate (Talon Books, $34.95) has landed
authors Lilia D’Acres and Donald Luxton
Vancouver’s Heritage Award of Honour.

Mayor Phillip owner presented the award during cere-
monies on Heritage Day, Feb. 21. Also last month, the book
was awarded the West Vancouver Heritage Achievement
Award.

D’Acres, a North Shore resident, and Luxton, who is
founding director of the Heritage Vancouver Society, were
praised for their contributions ro Vancouver heritage.
