PENDING the final approval of
Vancouver Park Bourd commissioners at 3
special meeting on Monday, plans are
afoot to widen the Staniey Park causeway.

A coalition made up of the Park Board, ICBC, Vancouver
City, TransLink, and the BC ‘Transportation Financing
Authority (BCTFA) has hammered outa plan to implement
extensive reconstructive measures, including:

& match the new width on Lions Gate Bridge itself, by stretch-
ing causeway Janes from 2.9 to 3.5 metres;

straighten the ‘S-curve’ (the bend in the causeway running
alongside Lost Lagoon);

Up until now, the Vancouver Park Board -- which is respon-
sible for Stanley Park -~ has balked at the notion of widening
causeway lanes despite widescale protest from the North Shore
municipalities

This latest scheme is close to park board approval in large
pare because of concessionary or ‘sunset’ clauses, like the even-
tual removal of private vehicles from Stanley Park.

“AH along, this was more than just a widening of the cause-
way,” said park board commissioner Allan De Genova. “The big
thing was getting cars out of the park.”

In 30 years’ me, he said, the Lions Gate Bridge would be
ready for further renovations. At that point, bridge traffic
should be contined to pedestrians, cyclists, and public transit.
