* The re-surfacing of a number of District and
School all-weather fields and drainage improvements to
the Ridgeview School grass field were completed last
month, to ensure full school and community use for
September.

’ * The rebuilding of the Pauline Johnson School grass
field is in progress and will be available for use by school
and community in the Fail of 2000.

_ * Findization of drawings and project costs are
underway for the upgrade of the Ice Arena, with users
being able to enjoy new and. expanded dressing rooms,
improved first aid, referee rooms, washroom facilities
and public use areas in the Fall of 2000.

* A detailed iand use planning study looking at the
Central Recreation Site area at 22nd, Street will begin
this Fail to assess existing land use and the future devel-
opment potential of the area.

* Staff have started pre-planning work for replacement
of: the Central Recreation Centre, the addition of a
leisure component to the Aquatic Centre and the expan-
sicn'of the cafeteria and program area in the Seniors’
: Centre.’ ‘

Ihe West Vancouver Royal Canadian Legion -
Branch 60 was chartered in November 1926 and

has been active for over seventy years in raising funds for °

a myriad of charities including the Lions Gate Hospital.
It was started as an ex-services’ club and to a certain
extent it still is, however, at least half the members now
have never been in uniform but they still believe in our
fundamental object of providing help to those, young
and old, who are unable to help themselves through ill-
health either physical or mental.

For example, in June we had the privilege of hand-
ing cheques, for a total of $20,000, to representatives of
some thirty charities and in October we will donate a
further $40,000 to representatives of more charities.
The charities include ‘Make a Wish Foundation’,
Children’s Heart Network, Children’s Hospital,
champs, Cancer, Heart etc. A complete list will be in a

Cur most visible fund-raising is, of course, the ven-
erable Poppy Campaign which, as with all of our chari-
ty work, is staffed bv unpaid volunteers from our mem-
bership who are always very moved at the generosity of
the general public. In this connection we also run the
school’s Remembrance programme wherein children
are encouraged to enter a nation-wide poster, poetry
and essay competition and we are very proud that West
Vancouver has had two national winners, as well as.
provincial, in recent years. ;

To close we are proud to be part of this half a mil-
lion strong organization which has done sc much good
for this country in both war and peace and will strive to
continue this work for many years to come.
