This was the general scenario when Joe Troll moved to Horse- shoe Bay in 1946 and took up one of the summer concessions that operated there from May until September. Troll had come with his parents to Canada from the Black Forest area in Germany in 1930. He lived in Edmonton, Vancouver and fi- nally Toronto, where he met and married his wife Dorothy. “We came to Horseshoe Bay more or less by accident,’’ recalls Troll, who is now retired. The concession they purchased was a fish and chip stand, and for a number of years, Troll had to round out his income by working as a waiter in Vancouver, and, for a time, doing construction at Park Royal Shopping Centre. The war years weren’t the best time to start a business like Troll’s. “*We couldn’t buy fat to fry so I had to render it down myself,’”’ says Troll. Then there was the time in 1946 when Troll got caught selling a hot dog on a ‘‘meatless Tuesday.”’ “They never did get around to fining me,’’ laughs Troll. Rationing began to ease off in 1947, and business began to im- prove. Owners of summer cabins started to use their properties year round. The introduction of the ferry to Gibson’s Landing in 1951 was another boost to the local you hear children’s laughter and the musical sounds of Grover sing- “Near and Far’’ or Raffi “Bumping Up and Down’’ in his little red wagon, it is probably little children getting a head start at feeling good and being well. By MAUREEN CURTIS Contributing Writer economy In 1962, the fish and chip stand was torn down and Troll’s began a new life as a restaurant in a new building where it continues to operate successfully. Joe and Dorothy’s three children, Gloria, Bob and Gary, were also involved in the family business, and Gary was the one who carried on after his dad, opening a pub in 1978 and starting 20 franchises across Canada. Gary is proud that Troll’s has provided the jobs that helped about 3,000 West. Vancouver young people get through universi- ty. Troll’s was also the recipient of an Olympic Sports award as a result of its contributions to amateur sports. Gary’s son Jason, now in his early 20s, carries on the family tradition as manager of Troll’s in Horseshoe Bay. The franchises have been sold off and he is con- centrating on the focal business. Educated at one of the world’s finest restaurant schools in Switzerland, Jason has ambitious plans for Troll’s. The kitchen has been extensively remodelled with the addition of a new, non-smoking dining solarium planned for November. ‘ Summer “GETAWAYS’”’ Price includes return airfare, hotels, hotel tax and is in CANADIAN DOLLARS, based on double occupancy.
