Coupland headlines festival Katharine Hamer News Reporter khamer@usnews.com: DOUGLAS Coupland, West Vancouver's raster of the zeit- geist, is speaking for the first time on a Vancouver stage at this year’s Writer's Festival. The Vancouver International Writer's (and Readers) Festival kicked off Wednesday on Granville Island and fea- tures readings from 90 authors. Fellow North Shore writer Nick Bantock gave a pre-festival reading varlier this month from his new book The Artfi: Dodger, Coupland will dose the show on Sunday night, giving the annual Bill Duthie Memorial Lecture at the Stanley Theatre. His subject is “The End of Books?” — a discourse on the growing digitalization of the written word. Ir’s an apt choice for an author who's as comfortable online as off. Famous for redetining the young sur- burban experience with titles like A Special Mountview Presentation... Generation X and Micrayrfi, Coupland is a contributing writer to Wired magazine, has worked as a Web designer and editor, and co-authored a book about the com: puter game Tomé Raider (in an online interview, he once said bed “rather know Lara Croft than Berty Crocker.” ) He's the subject of numerous fan sites — as well as having his own, wanw.Coupland.cony, a pop art-illustrated trip inside the author's mind. Coupland’s most recent book is City of Glas: Douglas Coupland’s Vanconver. Coupland sees the city which spawned Greenpeace, evberpunk, and Culture Jamming as being “a laboratory for new ways of thinking and fiving.” City of Glass matches Coupland’s teat with a wide-cress section of new and archival photography representing the many sides of the city. Other weekend highlights include the launch tomorrow afternoon by local pub- lisher Raincoast Books of a new fine of authors, like Gregor Robinson, Julie Burtinshaw, and Terence Young. Saturday morning there's a reading by Trish favourite Maeve Binchy (10:30 am. with ad pam, interview of American author Jimny Harrison (Leaends of the Fally at Pertormance Works. The Poctry Bash at 8 p.m. is always hugely popular. Candace Bushnell, author of the book that inspired the hit TV series Sex aad the City is on a sold-out Saturday nignt panel, Humour Me! s comedic authors like Leon Rooke. Sunday she and British novelist Michele Roberts talk abour women and sex from opposite ends of the historical spectrum. Also on Sunday is an 11 aan, brunch with a bevy of authors inchiding Leon Rooke, Wayne Grady, and “Veronto’s Catherine Bush (Wie Ritles of Engqaaenieit). Tickets for the Bill Duthie Lecture, which starts at 7 p.m. Sunday, are $20.
