10 — Friday, March 10, 1995 — North Shore News From page 2 ing no vote than if I get the services or not,” she said, She said she does not want the new channels. Gilbreath worries that Shaw, which serves most North Shore cable customers, wants co-op residents to switch to a more expensive individual service, However, Shaw regional manager Terry Medd said providing less than full service to bulk accounts does not make economic sense. Bulk account customers who want less than full service can switch to individual accounts, he said. . But Medd said, 1730 Duchess contains older wiring that cannot be used to offer individual ser- vices. He said cable customers at the co-op have two choices: continue to receive full service at a dis- count or rewire the building at Shaw expense and pay full price for the package chosen. “But they can’t have individual service and still get a bulk discount,” he said. “It would be a large money-loser for us.” The full package of new channels adds about $1.95 to current rates for full cable service, Medd said, Meanwhile, another disgruntled cable cus- tomer said Shaw changed his building on East Ist in North Vancouver from bulk to individual accounts in an “arrogant” manner, A Shaw notice to tenants said the building ; manager requested the change to individual ser- vice be made. Peter Bailey alleges that Shaw pushed for the change. Medd said Shaw has not made conversions mandatory, but acknowledged Shaw “encourages” apartments to change. “Ultimately, the decision rests with the owner, not Shaw Cable." Medd said. Medd said that in future, when information highway services may be provided, Shaw and cus- tomers will both benefit with individual service, which will maintain the consumer's choice. Five years ago Shaw offered two packages. Now it offers five and the number will continue to expand, Medd said. Another Shaw form letter informed 280 East Ist, St. tenants that for the next year they can receive the full cable package for $20.77 a month, the same rate bulk subscribers pay and a $2.40- per-month savings. No information is provided on. the basic $15:05-plus-tax cable service, which misleads consumers, said Bailey. Not providing the basic cable information, said Medd, is an oversight and customers are free to choose the basic option, but will not receive a dis- count. The building will give tenants a $20.77-a- month break on rent for the next year and Shaw will waive the $45 connection fee. Bailey said everything Shaw will offer already comes into the building, so making the change to individual accounts is just a way for the cable firm to boost revenues. About 8,000 units in the Lower Mainland receive bulk service from Shaw, Medd said.
