NINE NORTH Shore figure skaters have qualified for the Western Canadian Divisional Championships, being held in Coquitlam during the second weekend of December. By AP. McCredie Sports Reporter Eight athletes from the North Shore Winter Club’s (NSWC) skat- ing program and one from Hollyburn Country Club finished in the top four spots at the recent B.C, provincials — the 1995 Sun Life Sectional Championships — in Kelowna earlier this month. The Winter Club’s premier female performer, Keyla Ohs, the 1993 Canadian junior ladies’ cham- pion, won the sunior ladies’ compe- tition, keeping her dream alive of being Canadian senior champion. Ohs’. teammate Mark Vandekerkhove easily won the junior mens’ championship with a dazzling free-skate performance. Nicole Kaffka, from Hollyburn, finished third in the novice ladies" competition, which was won by the .NSWC’s Tania Srdanovic, the defending champion. Srdanovic showed consistency and a strong performance in defending her title. Kaffka’s Hollyburn teammate Jordan Millar finished sixth, and the NSWC’s Caroline Piggott was ninth and Sabrina Giglio was 14th. Heather Everitt, Lisa Daly and Tammy Wagner placed second, third and fourth respectively in the junior ladies’ division. All three NSWC members will be in Coquitlam in December. In the juvenile ladies’ event, NSWC’s Gillian Piggott squeezed into the western regionals with a fourth-place finish. Her teammate, Kimberly Chaa, narrowly missed the juvenile ladies’ cut with a fifth-place finish, while Hoilyburn’s Julia Kaffka Ak was seventh. The sole pairs team from the North Share to qualify for the regionals is the duo of Christopher and Melissa Coilins, who qualified in the top four in the senior pairs category. The Winter Club's Stacey Anderson placed (8th in the pre- novice ladies competition. The Western Regionals deter- mine who will represent Western Canada at the 1995 Canadian Championships in Halifax in January. The top four finishers from each division qualify. Many of the above competitors have competed at the Canadians before, so expectations are high some will win big on the East Const in two months. The Western Divisionals take place from Dec. 7 to tI.
