Volunteers planted more than 1,100 trees at Maplewood Flats THE WILD Bird Trust (WRT) of B.C. is pleased to report progress at the developing wildlife sanctuary at Maplewood Flats. During the Easter weekend, 75 volunteers planted over 1,100 trees and shrubs on the western boundary where the conservation area adjoins industrial land owned by Tolko Industries. Spring rainfall has given the. young plants’ good start. North. Vancouver scout groups also had a. planting day, adding another thousand seedlings. In April WBT received a cheque for $905 from the students’ union at Capilano College. Funding is in place, trom the District of North Vancouver and the Burrard Inlet Environmental Action Program, to construct a log shear boom at the mouth of the bay on the western side of the site. This will prevent further intrusion of large logs into the saltmarsh and allow the natural vegetation to recover, An initial clearing of logs and other debris was performed last summer. Final clearing of the bay deposit goo models will occur together with placement of the boom, at the end of May. WBT of B.C, will hold a special event, “Return of the Osprey,” on Father's Day, June $9, at Water- front Park (next to Lonsdale Quay).
