Thank heaven for little girls, VIEW FROM THE CHEAP SEATS GOODNESS KNOWS, the last thing I need is to have my reputation further ruined. Ten-year-old Christine Murray, of West Vancouver, wrote the Sports desk last week to decry the lack of coverage for a friend of hers, a ski racer by the name of Kasie Stroshin. It seents that we (yes, yes, Pm hiding behind the collective pro- noun), triumphed the exploits of a boy skier whose time Kasie had bettered. The young author of the letter warned that if we (there's that word again) did not address our neglect, we would be sorry. Her closing salutation reads: “Lotsa Love, from the people who can start a bad repu- tation for you.” As mentioned in the opening, my reputation as lale resides some- where between dreadful and abysmal, Hockey parents can be so cruel, They say it’s not easy at the top. Well, the bottom ain't so great either, However, being the profession- als we are here in the North Shore News newsroom, such oversights are dealt with swiftly and cleanly (Pat Quinn take note). While we could not locate atime to auribule to Kasie’s performance, we will take the word of Miss Murray and report that the Whistler Mountain Ski Club member, also 10, did indeed have a faster lime than “that Hemlack boy,” The Sports department's solici- tor, Sue Me, fearing the possibility of a lawsuit (what's new?) advises that Tadd that in no way did the exclusion of Kasie’s feat have to do with her being a girl. While not sharing my overpriced lawyer's creeping paranoia (again, what's new?) L must admit that the spectre of sexism did twinge in the back of my head (or was that a hockey parent?) Regardless, our apologies for overlooking the athletic achieve- ment of West Van's Miss Stroshin. By A.P, McCredie Sports Reporter Host schoo! Sentinel has again attracted a stellar line-up of talent to participate in the tournament. Fellow North Shore league com- petitors Carson Graham and West Vancouver will compete beginning at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, April 22, and concluding at approximately 3 p.m. the following day. Three years ago, members of the Capilanos — many of whom are involved in coaching rugger at the high school level on the North Shore — created the tournament to provide North Shore schools a chance to play some skilled squads from outside the Lower Mainland, The premier school tournament in the province is held annually in Kamloops, and is usually over- booked with participating teams. This year’s Classic line-up includes teams from Washington State, Vancouver Island and the Fraser Valley. In all, eight teams will take part in the two-day event. Rugby continues to grow in pop- ° ularity at North Shore schools. “We're on the verge of starting a program at the elementary school tevel, which will help raise the cali- bre of play in high school and for our club in the future,” says tourna- ment organizer and Capilano mem- ber Barry Howat.
