Board should loosen pursestrings for West Vancouver pupils’ welfare Open letter to Doug Player, su- perintendent, and Jean Ferguson, chairman, West Vancouver School Board Regarding the inequities of not allowing the November-December children to be enrolled in kindergarten this coming September with their friends, | am infuriated that this is being donc. } thought I was alone in my bat- de, but the front page article in the May 13 North Shore News made me aware that there are many other parents in my position who are just as outraged. The West Vancouver School Board claims lack of funds, and that by allowing November- December children to enrol in September they would be in con- travention of the B.C. School Act. Weil, Iet’s loosen the purse str- ings a litthe for our children’s welfare and tke an example given by other school boards by allow- ing these kids a September enrol- ment. Susan A. Island man Dear Editor: I have read Mr. Bob Hunter’s article of May 23, referring to the Lower Tsitika Valley on the nor- theastern coast of Vancouver Island. 1 can only express my disgust and anger at this article and the disservice it does to the people of Port McNeill and the North Island as a whole. Towns like Port McNeill are the lifeblood of British Columbia. Without the loggers, miners and fishermen living in remote com- munities like ours, you would not enjoy your present lifestyle nor have the paper your articles are printed on. Hunter says we exploit the nat- ural resources. Nobody says logg- ing is a pretty business. We say logging is farming. Good farmers use every bit of arable land avail- able and then harvest and replant. That is logging today. Hunter says the Kwakiutl have an inherent understanding of the meaning of stewardship of the land. Their connection to the past gives them an ability to look to the future. We say: hogwash. They simply are no different from the white man and subject to the same emotions and the same desires for security and a future. MacMillan Bloedel are good corporate citizens as are the other major forest companies in British Columbia. This is also true of the people employed by them. They are concerned for the environment every day and do not just give lip service to it. We believe the steps MacMillan Bloede! has taken to protect the whales at Robson Bight are en- vironmentally sound. Most of the problems, if not all of them, come from people in boats, planes or helicopters who show little regard for the whales. I suggest eliminating boats other than those specifically licensed for viewing tours in the area and not allowing planes or helicopters to fly low over Robson Bight. Mr. Hunter’s seeming ignorance of the North Island is outlined in his last remarks about Gerry Furney, the Mayor of Port McNeill. No person has done more for his community or the North Island. No one is more committed to the environment. We know the board agrees that children born in November and December are treated unfairly by the new dual entry system.
