a slap-happy film

dog. Gradually, their marriage
becomes as stable as the San An-
dreas fault and they head for the
courts.

Unfortunately, neither one is
willing to give up the house. And
that’s where the fun starts. The
war escalates from hurling favorite
chinaware to disappearing pets to
a battlecry of ‘‘no prisoners.”

Danny DeVito directs this mid-
night-black comedy with flair and
also has some of the best lines as
narrator Gavin D’ Amato, a family
friend. The rest of the cast is pe-
ripheral, usually serving as
astonished witnesses to the

The stery tokes its fe untolding
(perhaps a fittle too long: but will
appeal to those who the a tite
punch in thei Christmas cheer.

Here’s marriage on the rocks,
Deutschland-style. A philandering
ad executive discovers his wile is
having an affair and decides to
check out the competition, an un-
employed artist. Hiding his identi-
ty, he rooms with his wife’s lover
and slowly a transformation begins
to take place.

Writer/director Doris Dorrie
starts the film sluggishly, but it
builds nicely to a solid finale.
