Currently, our Social Issues Committee is working on resolving this problem through anti-littering and recycling campaigns. We must point out, however, that it is certainly not **recruits’’ from anywhere. Students are admitted to the college the case that Capilano College its students “creatures’’ to the neighborhood, it is more than like- community. students on the basis of their academic and financial standing, not whether they are ‘‘normal, decent young people.”’ As for not paying taxes to thwart bringing in more ly the students already live down the block or even next door. Of Cap’s entire student population, ap- proximately 70 per cent come from the North Shore Concerning parking problems at Capilano, we agree that car pools and public transportation are excellent ways of reducing congestion. Pay parking is not nec- essarily an effective means of control. This would on- ly be adding to an already heavy financial burden in- curred by students. Kerry Hall, Chairperson Capilano College Student Society Patrols would save lives Dear Editor: Regarding Squamish Highway carnage (Sept. 15), my solution to the problem is simple, inexpensive, can be implemented immediately, and guarantees an immediate and drastic reduction in the carnage. Hire 100 reliable people, supply them each with a video camera and radar gun, give them one day’s training, and have them each patrol alongside and on foot, 10- kilometre stretches of the highway. Have the patrols film speeding vehicles and those travelling on the solid line or over it (especially at curves), and vehicles passing on solid lines, and charge the drivers with criminal negligence. The video cameras will be effec- tive for lines of speeding vehicles as well as lone ones. At night, the patrols will drive at the speed limit and any passing vehicles identified to the patrolling police. The cost per year will be in the order of $3 million. The results will be the cessation of the car- nage, creation of 100 new jobs, and the saving of hundreds of mil- Something amiss on Taylor Way Dear Editor: Driving past the south-east cor- ner of Marine Drive and Taylor Way gives me an unsettled, some- what helpless feeling. The con- troversy over change at the site is well known. The fact is a long-standing suc- cessful West Vancouver business which provided a good and needed service to the community was evicted. It has not just changed location, it has disappeared. This was done to make way for a different but larger business which would return more money to the community but offer no ser- vice. It seems to me that something quite wrong has happened here. J.R. Skinner North Vancouver Earthquake-proof home as well Dear Editor: While one can sympathize with the concerns of Dawne Cressman over the structural safety of local schools in the event of an earth- quake (Nov. 13), one wonders why she has singled out schools for her agitation. Her son, along with every other child in B.C., spends six hours a day in school for each of about 195 days out of 365. This means that her child is in school for just over 13 per cent of each year. He spends far more of his time at home. I do hope Mrs. Cressman is spending a_ proportionate amount of her time and energy ‘‘quake-proofing’’ her house.
