TRAVEL CHEAPER FARES FOR AMERICANS Ticket price discrepancy is nothing new in travel busi THE RECENT reports of Canadian Airlines International providing seats to Amsterdam at substantially lower prices for Americans (proof of residency required so that none of US can sneak 2 ticket!) is nothing new. I encountered a similar bit of business several years ago, only this time it was involving a cruise line —- Costa Lines. I was aboard the ship, cruising around the castern Mediterranean, having a wonderful time. On days that the ship was at sea I got in- ‘volved with’ a bridge group and we'd deal the cards for hours. - One of the players was a feisty little guy, probatly close to 90, travelling by himself. Italian-born, but had lived in California most of his life. He could speak English fluently, but with such an accent we could bare- ly understand him. One day he arrived at bridge in a fury, waving the ship’s brochure — the Italian version. He had discovered that the Italians aboard the ship were pay- ing substantially fess than the rest of us, for exactly the same facili- ties. Not one to take this insult quiet- ly, he stomped to the purser, jumped up and down in front of the captain and fired off a letter to the president of the company, demanding a refund. He didn’t get it but I can’t say he didn’t try — he mailed me a file of correspondence that cost a cou- ple of dollars postage. eat I doubt if there’s going to be much change in the airline fares, but the determined traveller can take advantage of possible reduc- tions in cruise fares if he is prepared to be flexible. However, there are many fami- lies who enjoy camping holidays and this might appeal to the adventurous. “Trad Riders of the Canadian Rockies’’ has been staging a series of different trail rides through the scenic Rockies annually since 1923. Me neither, until a California friend sent me = clip- ping from the L.A.Times about this new gambling town right at the tip of Nevada by the Arizona border. He tells me that it’s'a great place _ to gamble, sort of down-homish as compared with Las Vegas or even Reno. There are excellent (and cheap) hotels — $30 a night is about average and lots of R.V. hookups. Meals are very cheap — he tells me that. you should never pay more than 49 cents for breakfast and $2.49 for lunch and dinner buffets. By the sounds of the article he enclosed, the place is booming with lots of big hotels such as Har- rah's and Ramada enjoying a piece of the action. Laughlin is a 300-mile drive from Los Angeles and is served by States-West Airlines out of all the major cities in California and Arizona. Just 60 miles south is Lake Havasu, which probably means nothing until you remember the ness London Bridge stery. In 1971, Lake Havasu bought the bridge from the city of London and had it dismantled and shipped over to be reconstructed as a tourist attraction. The story goes that they were expecting Tower Bridge and were quite disappointed. Making the best of it, they rebuilt the bridge and constructed a replica of an English Village around it.
