44 - Sunday, November 20, 1988 - North Shore News LIFESTYLES Don’t be a tourist at a stranger’s wedding DEAR MISS MANNERS — My companion received a wedding invitation, and he must respond soon. Our problem is that neither of us recognizes the name of the bride or the groom. What is the proper thing to do in a situation of this kind -- decline and send a gift, or go just to see if he actually knows any of the people involved? GENTLE READER — Miss Manners knows who it is. It’s that person at the office who works in a different department on the other shift, who is inviting the entire of- fice and fears that your companion would be hurt at being left out, never dreaming that an invitation would bring bafflement rather than delight. miss manners Judith Martin This is why Miss Manners is forever cautioning people to invite to such occasions only their friends — i.e., people who not only recognize their names but have demonstrated that they in fact like them, to the extent of socializing with them outside the office. Surely you are not going to go as tourists, are you? Would it be an incentive to stay home and behave yourself if Miss Manners told you that you need not then get them a present? DEAR MISS MANNERS — I have lived in the same city for over 35 years, and it is not unusual for me to run into people I know from as long ago as my elementary- school days. Pm always glad to see former schoolmates and friends, but most of the time I’m not interested in exchanging addresses and phone numbers. Sometimes the people I happen to see, it turns out, work for the same large employer I do; therefore, it's likely that PH see them again. What is the polite thing to do? GENTLE READER — Miss Manners makes a distinction be- tween exchanging addresses and CORRECTION NOTICE Gn page 13 of our Zellers Sale Flyer, sale dated Nov. 23-26/88, the price of $4.97 is for scarves only. DEAR MISS MANNERS — My son insists that it is never correct to eat the garnish, such as fruit slices (especially orange slices) that sometimes decorate dinner plates or drinks in restaurants. I believe that if you wish to eat the garnish, you may do so, and on occasion EF do. This causes great consternation on the part of my son, who claims to be ‘‘grossed out’? by my actions. We have agreed to abide by your decision in this matter. GENTLE READER — You win. As your son was obviously not brought up with this odd notion, you must wonder where he picked it up. Well, it wasn’t from Miss Manners. Short of munching on the cen- trepiece carnations or the ice sculpture, one may safely consume anything edible put in front of one, provided one does it grace- fully. If an orange slice is served on a duck, for example, one can cut the fruit free and eat it easily. The orange slice on the side of a drink may be daintily eaten by hand.
