AO - Friday, October 19, 1984 North Shore News Gl editorial page NEWS VIEWPOINT Education's tab IM MATKIN president of the Employers Council of B.C. warns that restraint in education spending is a mistake that threatens B.C.’ future. The essence of his messape is that educa- tion forms the vital foundation of the high lech, service-oriented, information-based economy to which the province must move as fast as possible. Tomorrow's world will no longer offer any — stable prosperity to mere hewers of wood and drawers of water. Coming trom a tree enterpriser like Mr. Matkin, the Jogic ww unarpuable. Other business leaders as well as highly respected academics are beginning to echo it. Whatever the public may presently find wrong with our public education system, if won't be cured simply by strangling the system financially. Nevertheless, Mr. Matkin would do well to take the warning a stage further. Huge government deficits---whether in the U.S., Ottawa or Victoria---are the key cause of our current economic woes. Until we again live within our means ‘as a society, no lasting re- covery is possible. B.C. has made a healthy start on this task, but it can continue only if any increased expenditure is balanced by in- creased revenue or by savings elsewhere. At this critical time for our future, ade- quate funding for the right types of educa- tion is clearly essential. Bul, one way or another, the citizens of B.C., not ‘‘the gov- ernment’’, will have to pick up the tab--- either in extra taxes or by cuts in other ser- vices or capital projects. Unless that is made equally clear, we shall simply slide back into further long (erm trouble. Pay the price! here can be no denying financial com- pensation to the B.C. man wrongly im- prisoned for eight years for a rape he didn’t commit. The argument against the death penalty is that a miscarriage of justice can always be corrected. Applying that logic to the present case, money is the only possible “‘correciion’’, inadequate though if may be measured apainst nearly a decade of a nmaa’s hfe.
