Monday is hear That ‘blue’ day is no myth CHICAGO (UPI) - There may be more to “blue Mondays” than meets the eye, reports a Canadian researcher who says more fatal heart attacks occur on Monday than on any other day of the week. Dr. Simon Rabkin of the University of Manitoba said im the current Journal of the American Medical Association 75 per cent of all heart attack deaths that occur on the job, occur on Mondays. “Reintroduction to oc- cupational stress, activity or pollution after a weekend respite may be factors precipitating the fatal heart attacks,” Rabkin said. In preparing a “chronobiology of cardiac sudden death in men. Rabkin studied cases of 3,983 men who died of sudden heart failure. He found that 75 per cent of fatal heart attacks among men at work and 47 per cent of cardiac deaths at home occurred on Monday. Monday, he said, stood far ahead of the other six days of the week in the number of sudden heart attack deaths of men who had no history of heart trouble. For those who have had previous heart attacks, he said, deaths were more evenly spread through the week. Government studies tampons OTTAWA (UPC) - The federal health department is investigating four brands of tampons after it was disclosed the product has been linked to 25 deaths in the United States, a department official said recently. Dr. Alastair Clayton, head of the Center for Disease Control, said “toxic-shock syndrome” created by the tampons was being closely monitored by several branches of the federal health department. “We are doing = sur- veillance, we are en- couraging reporting of the disease so we can get a picture as to the quantity of the impact in Canada,” Clayton said. Medical experts say the disease originates as an organism in the vagina builds up around or inside the tampon. As the organism multiplies, it produces a toxin. which enters. the bloodstream, causing shock, which shows up as a rapid Seven Seas Floating Seafood Restaurant 4 or, sample our Within easy access fall in blood pressure. Clayton said the federal government was ina- vestigating national brands including Playtex, Tampax and Carefree, as well as the Rely brand which is not widely available in Canada. Clayton said Canadian authorities “are looking at specimens of the bacteria and will do some analysis of the toxins produced”. He added that any of the tampon brands could be recalled. “We are looking at tampon use and marketing to decide whether or not it becomes a medical device, whether it should . be recalled... if indeed the evidence is such that the tampon should be removed from the market.” A tampon-linked illness has been blamed in _ the deaths of 25 women in the United States. There have been 14 cases of the syn- drome reported by medical officials so far in Canada, but no deaths.
