North Vancouver City Mayor Jack Loucks and Jack Poole, chairman and: chief executive of- ficer of BCE Development Corp., the company that owns the proper- ty, together pulled the switch that fired up the 13,644 lamps throughout the gardens. The extensive lighting display was designed and installed by North Vancouver’s ., Westsun Lighting Ltd.. Westsun | was also responsible for lighting the “‘sails’” for Christmas at the Vancouver Trade and Convention Centre, and had a number of projects at Expo - 86, including the transformation of the arena at B.C. Place to a full- scale opera house for the perfor- mance of La Scala Paul Flanagan of Westsun says that the total number of hours ze- quired to install and remove the lights — which draw 137,650 watts and require the use of 500 elec- ’ trical power cables — will total * hot and cold horsd’oeurves 1,500. He also notes that according to B.C. Hydro, ‘“‘the amount of electricity used in the month-long display would operate the average Vancouver home for 2.5 years.” : Work on restoring the gardens to their former splendor began two years ago. Landscape architect Jane Durante, who designed the . restoration, says approximately 80 per cent of the plant material re- mained from the original garden, and her biggest challenge was fin- ding interesting plants to replace the ones that had died or been removed. While all of the plants she gathered were from within North America, some, she says, came from as far away as Florida. On-site manager of the gardens Renna McCready says she is get- ting “good feedback from the yNEW YEAR'S LOUNGE (OPENING AT 7 PM) GO HAWAIIAN: Featuring NORM GLASS and TTAB VINCENT * party. hats and favors * plenty of surprisesi{ RESERVE NOW - - LIMITED SPACE AVAILABLE SBROO ‘ couple LYNNWOOD INN MAIN ST, AT MOUNTAIN HWY. : TICKETS AT FRONT DESK °: AND LOUNGE; a 988-6161/ of | i Development Corp., together fit the 13,644 lamps that will decorate the Park and Tilford Gardens until Jan. 6. visitors she sees daily. ‘‘They’re saying ‘we’re so glad that the gardens are still here,’”’ she said. “I’ve. got one wedding booked already.”* i i i Lights are’ ‘tumed on between 4 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. and are swit- ched off for the night at 9 p.m. The last night of the Christmas display is Jan. 6.
