AT - Sunday, November 20, 1983 - North Shore News Ef mailbox [><] Critics of teachers ignore complexities Dear Editor: I am a teacher. Conse- quently I have listened to and read with great interest the advice provided me by numerous citizens on how I ought to fulfil my obligations to my students, in the event that ] am asked to withdraw my services or to honour a picket line. Yet it seems to me that the issue is somewhat more complicated than is in- dicated by those who have so far had a great deal to say on the subject. In fact, as I see it, | have a number of obliga- tions. I clearly have that of continuing to provide my students with the opportunity to continue their education without interruption. However, I also have a con- flicting obligation to do what Up, down zoning illogical Dear Editor: The construction of a five- storey apartment building on five of the properties adja- cent to John Lawson Park is not the solution to the pro- blem of the waterfront owners. If West Vancouver council accepts recommendations to extend the Sea Walk through the two lots it presently owns at the foot of 18th Street, behind these five homes and along the north boundary of John Lawson Park (thus allowing full use of that park and waterfront by the public), the owners of these five properties should then be free to renovate or rebuild with their PRESENT duplex zoning. Alternatively, with the potential loss of a part of Ambleside Park, maybe these homes should be purchased for future parkland. lt seems only yesterday we had public hearings to down- grade cxisting high rise sites. Within such a short time are we now going to upzone cx- isting low rise sites on the waterfront? Rthe! And since most of them will become workers in this province, I have an obligation to do what I can to ensure the survival of rights won for them by workers in the past. I conceive that I have a deep obligation to strive to preserve for them a system of unions, which, while by no means perfect, are currently undergoing an attack by a government which appears determined to reduce them to the status enjoyed by unions in Poland, the Phillipines and South Korea, all in the aid of attracting investment by cor- porations which do not like to be inconvenienced by unions. Finally, I believe I have an obligation to set an example to my students in refusing to be cowed by a bully who threatens to eliminate my livelihood if | choose to act upon principle. Faced with such conflicting obligations to my students and my fellow citizens, I have made my choice. It has not been easy. Indeed, I retain respect for those few of my colleagues who, on principle, have chosen in the opposite direction. I do, however, wonder at the pomposity of those who, not having to Strike power is fast Dear Editor: Has B.C a New Spirit, a New Constitution, a New Charter of Rights? We shall continue to be governed by a duly elected legislature, but its enactments involving labour, human rights or education will be monitored by a group of labour unions and affiliates called ‘‘Solidarity’’. The legislature will enact the laws but if Solidarity does not ap- prove they will be revised or simply not enforced. In- evitably, to avoid unseemly conflict, the cabinet will first inquire whether a proposed bill will receive the necessary approval. Solidarity’s source of power is clear and direct. If the government does not comply with its views a series of strikes will prostrate the economy and close the schools. Not to worry about the legislature. Recently we have been shown how that body can be controlled and how any arguments of the opposi- tion can be silenced. When its chatter becomes tiresome, let it be promptly be stilled by closure and its leader exiled. Close the House in times of stress. We are awaiting further in- formation as to how Solidari- ty will function. Like all new make the decision them- selves, shoulder the respon- sibility of pontificating on how I must make mine, and who do so in a way which quite ignores the complexity of the situation. M. It will need legal advice as to rules, by-laws and staff. Selection of a lawyer will entail careful screening. For it will be found that many lawyers have been infected with a virus caused by years of im- mersion in abstract theories about Parliamentary Democracy and the Rule of Law. When such a one is in- structed that the objective of his client is to subvert those bulwarks of our society, he will be very disturbed. Indeed it may cause him to be sick at his stomach and even bring on a heart attack. When all details are in order, we shall have a stable society in which government and Solidarity will work together in harmony. For each will fear the power of the other; a sort of peace of terror comparable to the in- ternational scene. As the result of such stability, foreign investment is sure to follow and our future pro- sperity is assured. Some minor adjustments in the minds of the people should be undertaken by ap- propriate propaganda. For we learned last week that the ma- jority of our teachers are quite unaware of, or prefer to ignore, the principles of the Rule of Law and Parlimen- tary Democracy.
