Salmani_ recently opened the North Shore Shotokan Karate Instivute on West 1$th — street in) North Vancouver. He is a certified instructor with the Japanese Karate Association, the Inner-Traditional —_—Karate Federation and the World Karate Federation. Shotokan karate is a more fluid, non-contact form of martial arts that relies more on technical movements, or katas, than aggressive attack- img. It is still an extremely effective method of self- defense, said Salmani. Shotokan karate is the martial arts form accepted for competition in the Olympics. “In ‘the Olympics: they don’t accept contact. There they want the art,” said Satmani. From the ages of 14 to 18 Salmani was a competitive boxer before catching the eye of the ULA.E. national team. Salmani —- the all-time gold medal winner in his home region of Gilan, Tran, near the Caspian Sea — still regularly trains former stu- dents now living in Dubai, Iraq, Germany and the U.S. Salmani, who also claimed a iourth-place finish in the World Shotokan Karate Championships in 1990, instructs two of the members of the B.C. karate team out of his new North Van dojo.
