tus symbol dog. These dogs
usually don’t receive any
proper socializing, leadership
and training. They are usual-
ly kept in the vard never see-
ing, only hearing the world
around them, Sometimes
they are physically abused.
Now a dangerous dog has
been created and it is a mat-
ter of time betore someone
gets hurt.

Unfortunately this s
nario is common and if an
attack occurs the focus of
attention is on the dog.

Questions such as
whether or not to ban breeds
which are viewed as vicious
arise as solutions are sought.

Ifa breed of dog ts
banned, as current legislation
would fike, bad breeders and
owners will find another dog
to expioit such as the
Dalmatian or Collie. Both
have they same qual as the
other breeds mentioned but
they aren't viewed as vicious
(nor should they be}.
Irresponsible owners will
then purchase these dogs and
the evele will continue.

So what can be done to
stop the increasing incidence
of dog, attacks?

It all boils down to the
same old thing ~~ personal
responsibility.

Owners should be held
accountable for their dag’s
actions because in most cases
the attack is directly related
to Inappropriate and irre-
sponsible actions of the
owner which includes the
purchase of an unstable dog.
Both the dog and the person
attacked are victims ... ofa
negligent owner.

Coren is to speak at
Capilano College today
about “The Mind and
Language of Dogs.”

The lecture, scheduled to
take place at 2 p.m. in the
Performing Arts Theatre, is
free.

Coren is the author of the
books How to Speak Dag:
Mastering the Art of Dag

Hanan Communication,
What Do Dogs Know, and The
Intelligence of Dogs.

A Fellow of the Royal
Society for his contributions
to psychological research,
Coren’s work has covered
many areas in psychology,
including human vision and
hearing, neuropsychology, lat-
erality, sleep, birth stress,
behaviour genetics, cognitive
processing, and handedness.

He did his undergraduate
work at the University of
