The American new music label Composers Recordings Inc. (CRI), founded in, 1954, promotes the composition and performance of contemporary music. The label’s massive catalogue (composer- srecordings.com) includes some of the most significant music created over the past century and has been called “one of Amenica’s most precious resources.” One of CRI’s ongoing projects is the release of material from the Harry Partch (1901-1974) collection. They were the first commercial label to make his music available and have been the main dis- tributor of the visionary com- poser’s work for more than 30 “years. New releases from CRi illustrate the label’s dual role as both 2 source for historical recordings and a voice for new composers. Two Canadian-born com- Ws receive special CRI onors with retrospectives: Charles Jones (1910-1997) and Henry Brant (b. 1913). The, Music of Charles Jones was mostly recorded live at the Charles Jones Memorial ‘Concert, performed April 23, 1998 in New York City’ s St. Peter’s Church. Suing Onartet No. 6(1970) and Sonatina for Violin and ‘Piano'(1942) are from earlier CRI releases. Jones moved to New York to study music when he was 18 and began teaching 2t Juilliard _ in,1954. A marvelous composer, especially interested in the expressive interaction of piano and inne Jones is best remembered by his pupils... od Tan essay by Tim Page, written for the memorial concert, is included with the.CD. - Jones seems to have known everybody in the New York music world and encouraged his stu- dents to create their own musical languages. “= ‘His own Sonata da Camera (1966) for chamber ensemble “attains a rare synthesis of neo-classicism and expressionism, two elements that mugged throughout Mr. Jones output.” Listeners put off by “isms” of any stripe will * still find much to admire in Jones’ sensitive treatment. : : The recording provides a seamless mix between the new productions and the previ- “ously released material, however its a special ~ treat to hear the original version of the . Sonatina with Paul Zukovsky (violin) and Gilbert Kalish (piano). The two musicians get at the essence of what makes Jones worth remembering. Zukovsky also appears in the Quartet. Recommended. Many of Brant’s larger than life creations were rarely performed live because of the logis- tics required in realizing his directions. Orbits (1979) A Spatial Symphonic Ritual for 80 Trombones, Organ and Sopranino Voice is a case in point. Western Springs (1984) calls for two orchestras, ovo choruses and two jazz combos. Hi ieraglyphics 3 (1958) for six performers acts as a buffer between the two larger works. All three perfor- mances have been previously released on CRU recordings. In 1995 Brant conducted his orchestration of Charles Ives’ Concord Sonata in Ortawa. The work of both composers displays an interest in massive structures although the most recent Ives (1874- : 1954) release on CRI is in a much more intimate setting. Ives Plays Ives contains the complete record- ings the composer made for himself between 1933-1943. The tapes were not intended for public consumption but as personal documen- tation of pieces in performance — 42 tracks in ali representing 17 difference works. The recording quality varies considerably but provides fascinating insights into the cre- ative process of a genius at work. Essential. THE music of spatial music pioneer Henry Brant can be heard on CAI's American Series retrospective. Dr. Csilla Gyovai DENTIST Le ANNOUNCES. NEW.
