Food as Fuel Last week, we gave tips on keeping your external bodi- ly parts in good form. This week, guest writer, Tamara Spence, writes on proactive measures for your internal parts. Tamara, a PROWORKS race team member racing in the Senior Expert Cross-Country class, offers this basic nutritional advice: Ever feel a little lightheaded after or during a ride? You may not have refueled your bedy after a strenuous effort or not fed it enough fuel before skipping 4 meal. A lack of good food forces the body to rely on insufficient reserves of glycogen to support your activity leaving you hungry, tired or sapped of brain power. Carbohydrates such as bagels, pasta, and energy bars can be stored in the muscle as glycogen, which acts as a reserve energy source. It can be depleted in about 1-2 hours, so it’s important to eat before, during and after any intense activity. Complex carbohydrates take a ionger time to break down than simple carbohydrates and there- fore, provide longer lasting energy. My advice is to eat well and aij the time. Choose important carbohydrates and skip junk food such as pop and chocolate bars. Replenish your reserves before and after any intense activity. At these times, your muscles need to rebuild. Supplying them with the right building materials (food/glycogen) will ensure that you have the extra zip (0 remain strong. Muscle depletion can occur otherwise. Carbohydrates: raisins, dates, potatoes, spaghetti, bagels and apples Cliff Bar, Power Bar, Boost, Balance, and Stealth Bar If you have any questions or comments for the PROWORKS team riders, please email us at bikeriders@hotmail.com or visit the Cap’s website at www.capsbike.com Advertisement Popular energy bars: JOGGERS & TRAILERS!
