hand-tied bouquet for the bride, stitching together a lace and

relatively modern custom? Until the 19th century, many
women simply marricd in their best dress, whatever its colour
may be. During the American Revolution, republican brides

velvet richly embroidered with gold and silver. The old custom
of wearing blue — a popular choice because it was associated
‘with purity and fidelity — continues.
