Shaun 2 Conlin signals SEEING as that spanky new Low Road is such an expansive concourse for cars, it seems appropriate to cover yet another portion of it this week. Last week we discussed the Forbes Avenue section of the connector route link- ing Capilano Road with the Second Narrows Bridge as 4 response to reader J. Ranks? letters query. Not discussed was a fur- ther portion of J's letter in which he requested clarity on the proper procedure near the end of the fine, eastbound, where Main Street becomes either the Second Narvows Bridge on- ranip or continues under the bridge and becomes Dotlarton Highway. “If T continue along the Low Level Road,” writes J, “LT eventually end up on Main Street. “If T want to go over the (Sceond Narrows) bridge, 1 stay in the curb lane. [ff want to go to (the Maplewood area) [ use the left lane.” Indeed, Main Street in the Narth Vancouver District, eastbound, is wo lanes wide and also main- tains, on occasion, addition- al left turn lanes for access -ta the coramercial/ industrial area or for turning north onte Mountain Highway. The Main Street curb lane, eastbound, is the lane you will fad yourself in if you've taken the Low Level Road from North Van City and after spending a brief amount of time in the curb lane of Cotton Drive, which is where the Low Level Road and eastbound 3id Street jatersect and termi- nate. Remaining in that curb lane will, as J rightly pointed out, force vou onto the Second Narrows, which is fine because, it would seem, that’s where a lot of drivers on Main Streer want to end up. “Whac T don’t under- stand,” continues J, “is the ‘bonehead driver’ who goes past the long line-up in the curh Jane by driving dewn the left Jane and then cut- ting over to the on-ramp at the very last second. “These drivers will usual- ly cur somebedy off or block the traffic not trying to go over the bridge.” A very frustrating sec- nario, to be sure, especially considering the large num- ber of calm and foresightful drivers who know full well whatlane to be in betore reaching the Main and Mountain intersection Impatient and aggressive » the. greatest selection of natural stone and ceramic tile in town, 2550 Boundary Read (Benveen Grandview and Broadway) -X poe Saurday lOam -4 pm We have YOU may not like it, but it’s not always wrong to butt in line to get onto cope fe . Changing lanes at the very Last nicament is pertectly fegal only if a tew specitic criteria have tirst been met --- which bs why Tusually bypass the whole mess altogether by turning lett off Main at Lenn or Horbour, right onte Crown oc Rupert and right again onto Mountain Highway which has a sate and forgiving green arrow assembly for easy breezing onto the Second Narrows (sort of). If you choose to be an arrogant dork who's much too busy and important to sit in a traffic line up with all those silly patient folks, there are certain things you must do before executing your scoot and deke manoeuvre. First of all, just east of Mountain, where Main Street abruptly ends, there is only a paltry couple of car lengths where the white lane-edge line is broken/dotted. Two dots, in fact. After that the white line turn ominously solid and therefore prohibits you, arrogant bypassing dork, Jasy minute lane changing. But, even if the lane change is squeezed in at the appropriate spot it is only done so lawfully if the bypassing dork has “ascer- tained that movement can be made with sefery and will in no way afteet the travel of another vehicle (section P51 (a) of the mighty Motor Vehicle Act}.” Then there is the less- skilled/more-teeble bypass- ing dork who cannot make that last minute lane change so simply stops in the lett lane and waits fora break in the on-ramp fine. Fat chance, buddy. So there he sits, blocking the entire left lane of drivers wanting to visit Maplewood or Deep Cove or parts in between. That is so far out of fine as to be laughable.
