Three Strikes and
you've got a ticket

DRIVERS were given
chance to reduce their spec
before encountering a police
speed check last week in a
campaign called Three Strikes
and You’re Out.

More than 100 summer
students, part of ICBC’s
Youth Employment Initiative,
worked with volunteer speed
watch groups and local police
to encourage drivers to slow
down.

The effort took place at
more than 30 B.C. locations,
including the Lower Lonsdale
area of North Vancouver.

Motorists were offered two
chances to review their speed
and to slow down if they were
going above the speed limit.
Speed reader boards, devices

which provide a digital read-
out of a vehicle’s speed, were
used along a particular stretch
of road. Drivers who failed to
slow down after the two warn-
ings were issucd an appropri-
ate violation ticket by police
waiting at the third check-
point.

“Unsafe speed is a leading
cause of motor vehicle fatali-
ties,” said ICBC president
Thom Thompson. “Education
and awarencss efforts help dri-
vers slow down. Slow speeds
result in fewer and less severe
crashes and reducing crashes is
the key to maintaining afford-
able insurance rates.”
