Re: Coordinated Law Enforcement Unit
I am writing in reference to an article pub-

lished July 2 by Anna Marie D’Angelo concern-

‘ing the re-deployment of RCMP drug units,

The article speaks to CLEU as being “an
‘aloof, secretive and costly RCMP Unit operating
out of headquarters which produces few appar-
cent ‘results relating to large scale organized
crime.” .

This , description of, CLEU is completely
wrong, CLEU, in existence since 1974, is a
multi-agency law enforcement unit that operates
from its own building, located in Vancouver. The
personnel are a blend of RCMP and municipal
: Police officers 9s well as provincial special ‘consta-

bles, other regulatory agencies and civilians. The
operating costs are shared between the stake-

holders, with the province providing, primary
support and administering the funds.

CLEU is known nationally and international-
ly for our investigative expertise and successes in
organized crime cases, We get a continual stream
of visitors from around the world seeking mate-
rials and advice on how to set up similar opera-
tions, In addition, CLEU has been the recipient
of numerous awards and letters of merit.

CLEU is a unique law enforcement entity in
which the citizens of British Columbia can feel a
strong sense of pride.

Since first opening its doors

‘in 1950, Memorial Library has

boards, the Memerial Library
Foundation, the staff, the
Friends of the Library and the
volunteer contingent have all
worked hard to maintain its tra-
dition of excellence among
Canada’s public libraries.

Now, however, the library
board has kad to cut the book
budget and hours of operation.
As a.result, the Memorial

Library will be open to the
public fewer hours this year
than any other local library sys-
tem except Bowen Island's,
The further budget reductions
announced by council for next

year will only accelerate the

decline of this fine library. Is
that what the people of West
Vaneuuver want? [don’t
believe it.

Millerchip’s
conducting
commended

Dear Editor:

When our community
associations decided to
host an all-candidates
meeting during the federal
election, we had all the
ingredients, save one: a
moderator. None of us felt
we had the skills to carry
off this task well,

Martin Millerchip vol-
unteered to act as our
moderator — despite his
considerable election
workload. In the opinion
of the candidates and the
people . attending, the
meeting was a great suc-
cess — and in our opinion
the credit lies largely with
Martin. He did a great
job, conducting the meet-
ing with firmness and fair-
ness.
