density Dear Editor: North Van District Council has apparently decided that highrise devel- opment zones will exist in the Seymour area in spite of considerable public senti- ment against such develop- ment. One councillor speaking, in favor of the Seymour Parkway highrise stated that as there was an adjacent highrise, a new highrise would be “complemen- tary.” Does this indicate a future highrise corridor along the Parkway? Her comment was that the parkway was not a “suitable” place .to raise a family (referring to the sin- gle-family residences on the paricway that are surround- ed by higher density). What does this decision indicate for the waterfront? It appears that develop- ment instead of park is this council’s agenda and thus high-density development could spread to adjacent lands. After all, highrises need to cluster together until they form a zone, or in the case of waterfront, a West Van-like waterfront wall along uur foreshore. ° This. council needs to hear from the people who’ are opposed te this ype of high-density development at the Sept. 24 public hear- ‘ing on the proposed high rise waterfront develop- ment (Cates Landing). Council needs to con- sider fess’ intrusive and lower density. proposale than presently before them, Arc there not alternative ‘visions to a major high- density residential develop- ment for these fands? Council has rejected park purchase, Are there not others? John Addic North Vancouver Tunnel an ide Dear Editor: Recent news reports and letters in your newspaper strengthen ny sense that a tun- nel solition for the Lions Gate corridor is becoming the pupular public choice. Whether my suggestion that tunnel costs be met in part from real estate devel- opment on anew island off Brockton Point is becoming more acceptable is not as clear, This has prompted us to pursue additional options. I have presented the option described here to the premier, the ministry of high- ways, North Shore MLAs and the mayors and councils of Vancouver and the North Shore municipalities, It can deliver a fasting transportation solution without burdening future genera- tions with an unfair share of the cost. What is needed is a decisive act by the provincial government, with support from the municipalities directly involved, to follow the lead of Vancouver International Airport to have users start paying, costs when constriction starts. My tunnel system would carry vehicles and provide for light rail transit, cake commuter traffic out of Stanley Park, deliver traf- fic efficiently between downtown Vancouver and North Shore communities, and ease congestion by taking through traffic from Upper Levels directly to False Creck bridges. It has been demonstrated to be entirely feasible. It can be built without interfering with existing traffic patterns on Lions Gate and Second Narrows bridges. Environmental concerns’ can be effectively addressed in its construction. It has environmental gains from the removal of ’ 4 MAILBOX POLICY LETTERS to the editor must be legible (preferably type- weitten) and include your name, full’address and tele- phone number. (Tunnel) can deliver a lasting transportation solution. commuter traffic from Stanley Park and Vancouver's West End. It leaves the Lions Gate Bridge in place as a tourist attraction and to carry pedes- trians, bieyeles and local traffic from the North Shore to Stanley Park. It can be built with no interruption whatever in Port of Vancouver traftic. Ar Vancouver airport, user fees applied from the start of redevelopment, are pay- ing for the new facility. With decisive action to bring an immediate start on con- struction of my tunnel solution, P’'m sure the public would be willing to begin pay- ing for it now through a toll on existing crossings. A $2 toll would generate at least half of the costs by the time the project was com- pleted in about five years, The island I suggested might then be small and be dedicated as an extension to Stanley Park, perhaps as home to an imaginative civic facility equal to the Sydney Opera House in creativity and community value. Further delays on top of these already encountered in the search fora Lions Gate crossing sofution are not in the best inter- ests of the North Shore, the Greater Vancouver region, or the province of British Columbia.
