Surgeons can now replace hand and toe joints, wrists, ankles, elbows, and do total shoulder replacements.” Clarke says any of these procedures can havea hugei impactona patient "squality of life. Joint Decisions Most of those undergoing joint replacement surgery are suffering from primary osteoarthritis, a condition that involves breakdown in the normal cartilage surface of the joint. Some are suffering from secondary osteoarthritis found in limbs that had some previous trauma such as a fracture, an infection or a congenital condition. Candidates for joint replacement surgery § should consult with their doctors to decide the best course of treatment. Many physicians encourage patients to wait as long as possible before Having joints _ replaced, since artificial joints such as hips and knees have a life expectancy of approximately ten to fifteen years. But Clarke says they can last longer, depending on their use and abuse. “Activities like jogging or skiing will wear a hip implant out more quickly.” Joint Efforts The average hospital stay.for a patient undergoing hip or knee replacement surgery is seven days, with the rehabilitation process: ’ beginning almost immediately. The physiotherapy team gets patients up and mobile within a day after surgery. Physiotherapy continues onan outpatient basis for eight to twelve weeks, and patients are encouraged to continue muscle strengthening ¢ exercises at home. - : . i . : “Vat: the ’- recent Jeep” ‘Canadian Jr. National | 'Freestyle..
