AMONG MY fondest memo-
ries from recent years are
those of visits with Harry and
Anja in their Burlington,

Gni. home. It was the kind of |

home that stinnulates all sens-
es: sight, touch, hearing,
smell and taste.

The colors were serene and sub-
dued, dark blue in the entrance, blue,
white and rich wood colors in the
kitchen, wann peach and red hues
with touches of blue in the living
room.

I don’t remember entering the
house without hearing music, uplift-
ing sounds from opera arias, the sad
and melodious music of Jean
Sibelius, or the seductive voice of
Ella Fitzgerald.

Harry was as much a connoisseur
of music as of wine, and the aromas
from Anja’s cooking and baking
wafted through the house like happy
little clouds. Meals were rituals, cele-
brations of all that grows and tastes
good.

My favorite place, however, was
in the gazebo. It was connected to
the house by ramp and blended
unobtrusively with the trees, flowers
and shrubs in the garden.

Just before sunset, after a hot

summer day, it was a perfect retreat.

The mysterious Chinese characters
above the entrance meant, according
to Harry, “Living well is the best
revenge.”

who has lived in a wheelchair for
more than 20 years and has adapted

Just over 10 years ago, we
observed the Yeur of the
Handicapped and have done much
since then in public buildings, in
malls, businesses and in city streets
to remove barriers and make spaces
accessible.

And wouldn't you agree that we
have all benefitted?

Bartier-free design makes sense;
it is functional and often better than
standard design. Just watch how
many people choose to walk up or
down a ramp, when faced with a
choice of ramp or stairs.

At Robson Square, for instance,
the ramps are not only functional;
they have added an interesting diago-
nal pattern to an otherwise intimidat-
ing set of stairs. They've also
become irresistible to teenagers on
skate boards.

Door knobs are slowly being
replaced with lever handles, much
easier to operate; many entrance -
doors have a small knob at the side
and open automatically when the ;
knob is pushed.

Some traffic lights combine
sound and color to signal ‘walk’ or
‘stop.’ Curbs have been lowered at
crossings — this has removed an
obstacle for al] of us who have a ten-
dency to stumble over them. «
