Pearee was responding Thursday to accusations by David Flather. a North Vancouver man whose father was gunned down by David Roger Henderson, that the institute is acting in a “grossly neg- ligent manner” by allowing Henderson such valks. Flather and his brother Bob called a press conference Wednesday afternoon to publicly protest the fact that even though Henderson’s one-year sentence has been renewed, he has lately been allowed to stroll unescorted on unfenced hospital property one mile from a road. The men's father, Lions Gate Hospital Dr. Verne Flather, was shot by Henderson in front of his East Keith Road home in April. 1992. Henderson was found to be suf- fering from paranoid schizophrenia with a strong persecution complex at the time of the murder. B.C. Supreme Court accepted evidence that Henderson was insane and therefore was not criminally responsible for the shuoting. Last Octeher he was confined to the maximum security area in the Port Coquitham — Forensic Psychiatric Institute for one year. Henderson's sentence was re- evaluated and then renewed Wednesday by the Forensic Psychiatric Institute's review board. Flather attended the hearing and was shocked to discover that Henderson, who he said was described by hospital staff as “highly dangerous.” is allowed some fiberty on the grounds. According to Pearce, the spokesperson for the institute, “Unescorted walks are one of the ways we judge the progress that’s being made.” He said such walks allow clini- cal staff to monitor the patients’ progress, watching how they ban- dle responsibility and whether they cun determine the difference between right and wrong. The decision to renew Henderson's sentence was made oy the institute director on the basis of information provided by clinical staff Pearce said their resolve to allow Henderson some freedom means “they are obviously pleased with this man’s progress.” SHAK) | SHORE SINCE 1969
