Docters’ extra billing

THOSE NORTH Shore residents who
have paid extra for services from doc-
tors for almost two vears won't have to
reach into their pockets any more.

The provincial government announced on
June 24 that a negotiated agreement has been
reached with the B.C, Medical Association
(BCMA) over the practice of extra billing.

The deal took effect immediately, accord:
ing to a Health Ministry spokesman.

Said BCMA president-elect Victor
Dirnfeld. “Pan pleased with it (the agreements
because it serves the interests of both parties:
the doctors who have opted out and the gov-
ermment.”

Health Minister Paul Ramsey said in Mity
that he planned to introduce tegislation to end
extra billing this month Wa negotiated agree-
ment with approximately 41 BoC. doctors
couldn't be reached.

Extra billing involved billing a patient for
medical services in an amount greater than
what the Medical Services Plan (MSP) paid
or reimbursed the patient.

held $4.72 million in transfer payments to
B.C. because doctors here were extra billing.

Chan said in May that the 13 North Shore
opted: out doctors charged above the MSP
fees because they were receiving about 10%

Dirnfeld said one North Shore opted-out
doctor has not signed the agreement. Dirnfeld
declined to name the doctor.

Ramsey said if wasn’t necessary to intro-
duce legistation because only an handful of
doctors hadn't signed the agreement.

He said that some of the unsigned doctors
had plans to leave Canada and practice medi-
cine elsewhere. Chan was unavailable for
commnent lo press time.
