eh i sie Portugal: exploring home of explorers THINK OF Portugal and you think of the Algarve. Most people do, anyway. But those who've travelled this varied land of hills and valleys on the western edge of the Iberian Peninsula know there's 2 lot more to it than sun, sand and sea. There's Lisbon and Madeira, the Riviera and the Berlengas, the Costa Verde and Costa de Prata. And because Portugal is still rel- atively inexpensive, you can travel easily around city and countryside without breaking the bank. As a coastal country, Portugal has spawned some of the world’s ” most famous explorers. From the charting of the Azores in 1427 to the discovery of Japan in 1542, Portuguese explorers were the first to regularly ply the major sea routes to southern Africa, India, the Far East and the Americas. In honor of these discoveries, ' celebrations throughout the country kicked off in 1988 and will contin- vue right through to the year 2000. While the south has the hedonis- tic Algarve, the central and northem regions are largely unspoiled, with quaint villages and wonderful scenery. If you arrive by air, you'll likely land at Lisbon’s Portela Airport. Don’t rush out of this ancient and lovely city by the sea; there's so much to see and do you could easily spend your entire vacation there. See how the Moors left their mark by exploring the Alfama, a maze of narrow, twisting streets that wind their way up past a jum- ’ ble of white-washed houses toward St. George’s Castle. Marvel at the royal palaces and museums in Belem. Stroll the Avenida da Liberdade, the Portuguese version of the Champs-Elysees. Check out the theatres, night- clubs, bars and restaurants in the Bairto Alto. Just over 30 kilometres west of Lisbon lies the Portuguese Riviera, a stretch of coastline populated by ' ex-pats, exiled European royalty and your average sun-worshipper. :* Play in the casino or gasp at the luxury villas and chateaus Of Sintra Meet cruise crews * CRUISE: l “Canada, ‘one of Canada’s largest cruise-only: travel agencies. is hosting ‘an. open house on . Even though it's a tourist mecca, the Algarve is still worth a visit. Portugal's southernmost holiday resort stretches over some 240 kilo- metres of sun-drenched coast, some wf it overdeveloped, some still rela- tively quict. The main tovins of Lagos and Faro are where the action is and where you'll fird wonderful restau- rants, museum, and cathedrals. The nortn, known as the Costa Verde, “the green coast,” is far less populated and developed than other parts of the country. There fertile, roliing hills are ideal for growing the famous porte and vinho verde wines (the town of Viseu is a good place to start sip- ping). The best time to visit Portugal is from spring to autumn. If you don’t mind cooler temper- atures and the chance of rain, prices are lower and crowds are fewer between November and February.
