By June Campbell Contributing Writer If trudging mechanically up and down the seawalk has become monotonous, you may want {o consider these short, safe, and ac- cessible walking trails for a pleas- ant family outing. @ Whytecliff Trail: After explor- ing Whytecliff Park, reached from Marine Drive near Horseshoe Bay, locate the traii head situated in the overflow parking lot. After climb- ing a Night of stairs, follow this oft-branching trail until it deposits you on Hycroft Road. For variety, return by a different branch. Allow one hour. ® Point Atkinson: From Marine Drive, turn south on Beacon Lane, and continue to the carpark at Lighthouse Park. There, you may select your trail from the map display near the trail head. The easiest, but feast scenic, route to Point Atkinson is the park ac- cess road. Allow at least two hours to enjoy this walk. @ Ambleside Trail: Park at Ambleside Beach, then walk cast along the beach and trail. Pass Park Royal South before walking under’ the two Marine Drive bridges. Follow the. riverbank, detouring Woodcroft | residential complex, to pick up the Capilano Pacific Trail behind this complex. When the trail emerges on Keith Road, you may retrace your steps, or find your way back through ci- ty streets. Return trip Cakes about an hour. @ Capilano Pacitie Trail From Taylor Way, turn left onto Keith Road, which you follow until dead-ends at the Capilano River, Waik afong the gravel roadway until you reach the head of the trail, After about an hour, the Shinglebolt Trail branches to the right. The Shinglebolt will take you to the salmon hatchery, while following the Capilano Pacifie will bring you out at the Cleveland Dam with its picnic areas, maps, and pamphicts. Retrace your steps, allowing about three hours for this outing. @ Bowser Trail: This 20-minute trail begins behind Pemberton Plaza, off Marine Drive, and emerges on Capilano Road. It may be extended on its eastern end by walking along !7th Street to connect with the trails running through Heywood Park. @ Mosquito Creek Trail: Begin- ning in-a small playground at the intersection of Fell Avenue and Larson Road, this trail follows the west side of Mosquito Creek. runs under Upper Levels Highway (if not too wet to navigate), final- ly emerging in William Griffin Park. To access the northern ex- tension, cross West Queens Road, then follow Del Rio Drive, picking up the trail at its dead end. This section of the trail emerges on Montroyal Boulevard. The three-km (1.9-mile} Rice Lake Guided Nature Trail is flat, seenic, and offers picnic tables as well as a pier for fishing or sunning. © Hastings Creek Trail: Park at Bridgman Park off East Keith Road, east of Mountain Highway. Walk under the two bridges, and corth along the west bank of Lynn Creek. At a powerline, the track tums left and ascends a steep Might of stairs, bringing you out on Arborlynn Drive. Walk right along Arborlynn until you reach the head of the Hastings Creek Trail just past the intersec- tion of Hoskins Road. Follow this trail for about 45 minutes, until it emerges behind a school on Bushnell Place. Enjoy a pit stop at the nearby Lynn Valley Centre before retracing your steps back to your car. o Lynn Cseek Nature Access Trail: Park at Bridgman Park, as above, then cross Keith Bridge to the east side of the creek. Descend to the trail running under the Up- per Levels, passing the Fire Hall and entering the paved access trail. Follow the pavement, then the gravel path, until you reach the Lillooet For a pleasant stroll of about an hour, you could turn back here.
