Laughter big health boost THIRTY SECONDS of laughter is supposed to double your heart rate and increase your blood flow. Ten minutes of laughter has been said to be the equivalent of an {!8-minute cardio workout in an aerobics class. Laughter also boosts the im- mune system and relieves pain. None of this information is a surprise to Peggy Scott-Dunn, registered psychiatric nurse at Royal Columbian Hospital in New Westminster. Scott-Dunn gives talks called “‘Laughter for the Health of it” in hospitals and around the community. On Saturday, March 27 from 10:30 a.m. to noon at the Silk Purse Art and Cultural Centre, Scott-Dunn will give a lecture on the psychological and physiological benefits of laughter on health. Said Scott-Dunn, ‘Almost everyone instinctively uses humor to relieve stress, usually without knowing it. I try to make people aware of what they are doing.’’ Admission to the lecture is $5 and includes tea or coffee. Silk Purse Art and Cultural Centre is located at 1570 Argyle Ave. in West Vancouver. .
