By Maureen Curtis Contributing Writer Located close to the district's largest intersection al Taylor Way and Marine Drive and operated on an annual budget of $14,600, the depot is one of three recycling drop-off depots on the North Shore. West Vancouver District Coun- cil voted Nov. 23 to close the depot by Jan. 30. A second West Vancouver depot at Horseshoe Bay was clos- ed in 1990, with no public reac- tion, according to West Van- couver assistant director of opera- tions Doug Wylie. Now that the blue-box recycling program is in place, council agreed that West Vancouver resi- dents did not need the depot. Used by residents, non-residents and commercial enterprises, the West Vancouver depot was often left in an unsightly state that was the source of regular complaints. Council was left with the pro- spect of increasing the weekly cleanup of the depot, which cur- tently costs $5,000 a year, or shutting down the facility and directing users to the curbside blue-box program, The long-term regional plan is to have one manned central depot in North Vancouver that would accept a wider range of materials. The West Vancouver closure was protested by one man who said he liked having an ‘‘alter- native’? to the blue-box program available.
