Although Coun. Andy Danyliu was ‘ready to sink the whole teahouse issue, Coun. Diana Hut- chinson managed to table the matter for a week to allow Mayor Mark Sager to return from vaca- tion. “The mayor has been par- ticularly involved in this, and he shouldn’t be excluded now,”’ agreed Coun. Pat Boname. For about three months, start- ing in August, Fuerniss proposed that the teahouse would offer refreshments outdoors under a glass shelter. Althcugh lack of dishwashing facilities inside the house would require the use of paper or plastic plates and utensils, Fuerniss said that well-dressed employees would make suse that the refuse would be picked up and recycled. Liz Byrd, who is a member of the district’s parks and recreation commission and the long-range planning task force, said that the teahouse was a “really innovative idea.” “There is only one waterfront restaurant in West Vancouver — Peppi’s,”’ she said. ‘But Jim Southcott of the Sea- wind apartments repeated Monday night his predictions of the noise, smell and disturbance that could be created by the establishment of a teahouse at the proposed foca- tion. After October most people would be coming to the teahouse by car, and where are they going to park?’’ asked Bruce Lord of the Mariner's apartment building. Acting West Vancouver Mayor Rod Day told the News that council has consulted extensively with the residents of the apart- ments which, he felt, were not that close to the proposed teahouse. WEST VANCOUVER DISTRICT COUNCIL Day said that turning the small, isolated area into another park could invite more noise and disturbance, especially late at night. Council backed away from the proposed teahouse trial period. But said Coun. Danyliu, ‘‘It seems clear that we have erred in picking that site for a teahouse, although we didn’t make a mistake in acquiring the site.’” According to Coun. Hutchin- son, the municipality paid about $750,000 for the Wells property because of its key location. “But we did it on the under- standing that there would be some kind of return on the money,’’ she said.
