8 - Wednesday, April 8, 1992 ~ North Shore News Logging decision disappoints Dear Editor: | am appalled at the recent reversal of the GVRD on wa- tershed logging. After much effort a conser- vative “hold back and look’' approach was to be instigated, and now nothing. To read that my mayor, Jack Loucks, is comfortable with the decision shows me his connection to the community pulse. The water quality is dropp- ing and sedimentation is rising. Many of the foundations of our community — clean air, water and a friendly environ- ment — are teetering. Continu- ing our business-as-usual at- titudes will only crode them further. Gallery Alpha, in West Van- couver, is transforming so it will be eligible for government fund- ing. Another entity to suck money out of your and my back pocket because Ron Falcione feels his gallery shows art the public needs to see. And Graham makes this decision sound like a noble and progressive move. The gallery has fost money since itis inception. Why? Because the art shown and offered for sale is not of a quality which the collec- tor is willing to purchase. Falcione is committed to ‘‘providing the public with what's innovative in the arts.’’ Clearly, the public has shown that what Gallery Alpha ° NO MONEY COWN + NO INTEREST ¢ NO PRYMENTS UNTIL AUG. 1995 Mee, FINANCIN BUT ONLY UNTIL APRIL 18 i 4 Buy 3250 or more and use your Radio Shack credit i card. Because he cannot maintain his gallery, Falcione wishes to perpet- uate what the public doesn’t want through government funds -—- our tax dollars. [ am an artist. I have never sought financial assistance, nor plan to. My philosophy is I have a responsibility to create work that is esthetically beautiful, that tefreshes the eye. [ follow the path of Praxiteles, Michelangelo, Rodin and Moore, who created timeless, enduring works of art. { create art that the public wants to see, and they prove that by col- lecting it. If | were unable to support my art myself, 1 would move on to something else. | don’t follow the dreamy, starving, suffering artist philesophy of people like Ron Tandy 2506 Falcione and Archie Graham. if Falcione feels a responsibility to continue Gallery Alrha, he should keep financing it himself. There is enough financial strain on the taxpayer already. We need to start developing a positive attitude toward responsi- ble, professional art.
