18 - Friday, July 26, 1991 - North Shore News THE CANADIAN Garden Coun- cil receives many questions from gerdeners around the country. The following are a selection for the interest of gardeners everywhere. Johnson Dunlop of Halifax in- quires about references to a plant called goutweed. He writes, “a garden column in a_ national newspaper recently indicated it was severely invasive, and should be avoided at all cost, particularly if the subject planting area is ex- _ Municators HOME & GARDEN Canadian Garden Council answers reader questions groundcover. Who is correct?” The Canadian Garden Council comes down on the side of Mr. Dunlop's friend! All plants, even weeds such as dandelions, have their place. Often garden com- condemn certain plants because they have had a bad experience. One of the govtweed'’s worst points is its common name. Perhaps an alternate name for this plant (botanically aegopodium podograria *Variegatum') such as has leaves somewhat similar in shape to those of Manitoba maples. White flower heads in June are an addi- tional feature. {t does spread rapidly but this is an advantage in most locations — particularly shade -- where a groundcover is needed. Its roots may easily be pulled out if it maps. She says she has read of a new map published in the U.S.A. but ‘I wonder if it is applicable to Canada, even though the U.S. people say it is.*” The Canadian Garden Council replies that the U.S. Department of Agriculture has indeed recently published a revised hardiness map that is far more detailed for the U.S.A, However, even though the map includes Canada, and its devel- to have had cor- published in 1967 by Agriculture Canada is far superior. Though the federal government has not reprinted the map, and it is currently not available, the Ca- nadian gardening magazine, TLC For Plants (1 Pacifique, Ste-Anne de Bellevue, Quebec H9X 1C5), has published it in its Summer 1991 edition. All gardeners should keep in mind that hardiness maps are posed to any amount of sun. Is this true? A friend told me she the plant an spreads too far.
