Tune up car before
embarking on trip

THE COUNTDOWN 'tll the end
of school is over...summer is here,
and many families are making
plans for holiday excursions
around “super Natural 8.C.°’

Yes. it's time to pull out the
road maps, plan your packing and
pick out which of the relatives will
be blessed with a visit. Is also a
good time to give yourself, your
family and your car a ‘‘safety
tune-up” before you hit the road.

Let’s start with your car. Even
if the family buggy seems to be
tunning well around town, it may
need some attention before it
takes on longer trips at sustained,
higher speeds, on some of our
variabie terrain, climate and road
conditions.

Engine and cooling system
maintenance may improve gas
mileage and dependability. Gear-
ing down your automatic
transmission can help your vehicle
handle some of those long grades
without over-heating.

Of course, we can never over-
emphasize the importance of good
brakes and tires, but your shock
absorbers are just as vital. Good
shocks can improve ride and road

high for my liking and headroom
may be a problem for tall people.
Rear seat legroom and headroom
is adequate for short trips but the
deep rear seais don’t have a lot of
padding on the bottom.

Fifty-four thousand dollars may
seem like a lot of money for a
sports coupe, but feature for
feature, the SC 400 actually costs
less than its major competitors.

gers should sit in areas designated
for them. Children should not ride
in sleeping areas above the cab,
nor should any passengers ride in
the cargo areas of vans or
pickups.

Of course, everyone has to he
buckled up, but you should also
make extra sure that infant and
child restraints are properly in-
stalled and that tether straps on
seats so equipped are properly an-
chored to your vehicle. Check
with the dealership that sells your
make and model for advice on
proper anchoring points.

Of course, as safe as your vchi-
cle may be, much depends on how
well you drive. Any review of ac-
cident statistics will tell you, the
biggest causes of accidents are
human action and human condi-
tion, so next week we'll turn our
attention to you and the condi-
tions you'll face on the ‘‘open’’
