12 - Wednesday, February 15, 1989 ~ North Shore News W. Vancouver residents push | ONE STOP SECURITY for more highways spending VARIOUS MEMBERS of the public urged West Vancouver District Council to use its influence with the provincial Department of Highways to lobby for improvements to local roads. “We're not ectting any moneys spent on highways here,"* com- plained Fisherman's Cove resident Sack Howard. He pointed to the hazardous sit- uation existing on sections of the Upper Levels Highway, where he said rainwater buildup nearly causes vehicles to ‘‘plane,’’ and often results in a blinding spray. Howard also said left-hand turn lanes were long overdue at the two intersections heading up Taylor Way between Marine Drive and the Upper Levels Highway. He spoke out following a pres- entation from Pasco Road residents who are trying to get a left-turn !ane on Route 99. Located off the Squamish Highway past Horseshoe Bay, the 19 Pasco Road lots are within West Vancouver District. LOST They are, however, only ac- cessible via the provincial highway, such that residents and visitors have to slow down and turn left across the oncoming lane. Limited visibility. te-ufficient warning and increased traftic on the highway have resulted in a dangerous situation for motorists and several serious accidents have occurred, ‘The situation is getting desper- ate. There will be a fatality unless something is done,”’ said Stefan Grzybowski, whose wife is current- ly suffering from whiplash as a result of an accident at the in- tersection. According to Pasco Road resi- dents, the provincial government This beige cocker spaniel was lost in Lynn Valley area February 6th. Tui is blind and is wearing a red collar. Minister —— ey Apphaations are has expressed an interest in putting a Jeft-turn lane in if the cost were shared by the district. “This is the jurisdiction and re- sponsibility of the provincial gov- ernment,** emphasized municipal manager Terry Lester, noting that the left-turn lanes at Sunset Beach and Ansell Place were provided by the Ministry of Highways. “We have been very consistent in supporting Pasco Road residents in their request for this lane. It's regrettable that the Ministry of Highways continues to turn a blind eye to their need,’* added Lester. Although highways engineers have previously not seen a need for a left-turn lane, Ald. Mark Sager said that making the turn is nearly impossible in the face of a ‘solid line’’ of skiers returning from Whistler. Council agreed to have a letter of support drafted, signed by Mayor Don Lanskail and sent to provincial officials.
