36 - Wednesday, November 11, 1987 - North Shore News BUYING A CAR e consur BUYING A new car is a major in- vestment. Here are some tips that may help save you money on your next vehicle purchase. © Obtain a brochure from a dealer on the car(s) you are inter- ested in purchasing. Review the brochure carefully, and jot down the items you would like to have on your car. Decide in advance that you are going to visit with at least two agencies before making your pur- chase. e In visiting agencies, give the impression that you are prepared to make a purchase. Tell the salesman the make and model vehicle you are interested in, as weil as the options and accessories. Even though you may want to trade in your present vehicle, do not disclose this fact to the salesman. If asked, tell the salesman that you may have a buyer for your present car, and you are therefore interested in the cash price of the car you are con- sidering. ORDER FORM Do not accept a verbal total price for the vehicle. Instead, ask the salesman to write up an order form listing the. price of the vehi- cle, as well as cach option and ac- cessory separately, along with the THE ONE STOP DIRECTORY FOR ALL YOUR prices of each item. Keep in mind that this form is valueless unless signed by the general manager or owner of the firm, so if you consider the price to be a good one, make certain you obtain cither of their signatures. Do not allow yourself to be swit- ched to another vehicle which may contain other items unless you follow the same procedure of first requesting an itemized written order form on the vehicle. This order is for your protection so that someone will not tell you later that they failed to include some cost which may not have ap- peared on your original order form. If you are given several prices on several cars, it is abso- lutely necessary that you obtain an order form on each car since the purpose of giving you several prices may be to confuse you. SECOND AGENCY Once you have obtained the order form(s), thank your salesman for his courtesies, tell him you will make a decision within the next few days, and go on to the next agency. Follow the very same procedure at the next agency, making certain your order form from the second agency con- tains an itemized listing of the ex- act specifications as is listed or 1er-wise your first order form. Only in that way can you com- pare the prices you have been given. Read the order form carefully, and in most instances it will con- tain a statement to the effect that the form is valueless unless proper- ly signed. * Once you have arrived at a decision, you then have several considerations. If you are interest- ed in using your present vehicle as a trade, make certain you review the prices of similar-type cars in the used car section of your news- paper. Then cail a couple of used car dealers and ask if they have a simi- Jar type car to sell. If so, ask them to quote you a price — so that you’ll have an idea as to the worth of your vehicle. Once you have a fairly good knowledge as to your car’s worth, go back to the agency which gave you the lowest price on the new car, and tell them you were unable to sell your car privately, and that you'd like to use it as a trade on the new car. Again, you must be careful to obtain any price you are given in writing and you must be certain that it contains the signature of an authorized member of the agency. AUTOMOTIVE NEEDS.
