Cafe Roma is an easy-going pasta, pizza and ensalada retreat. Not another, those of the over- pastaed and pizzaed palates will surely groan. But fear not, the new ee table e hopping Corsi venue that has been installed in the 60 Semisch Avenue location is several cuts above tiresome old Charley and the majority of stan- dard pasta and pizza emporiums. Gone is Charley's Top 40 from the year 1900-to-now dance musical serenade and the strained upbeat atmosphere. Sent packing with Charley and his two-tone shoes and hennaed hair is the heavy-meat and gourmet-burger menu. Corsi has stopped twiddling chicken fingers and once again tapped his rich Italian culinary heritage. PASTA PLUS Cafe Roma offers a virtual wall of pasta with 50 selections, all made on the premises; a_half- dozen interesting pizzas; a sprinkl- ing of main seafood and meat en- trees; and a good selection of Italian appetizers. Waiters must no longer feign in- terest in the latest fashions and sounds. Instead, they are free to discuss with genuine enthusiasm, as did the waiter who served my wife and spicy Halian red pepper sauce. In the antipasto, tiny whole oc- topus, and slices of squid, red pepper and carrot lay pickled beneath a lovely olive gil vinaigrette. me, the food they so revere: fresh - pasta, fresh seafood, wild mushrooms, virgin olive oils, fresh herbs, proscuitto... Appetizers at Cafe Roma are concentrated in the $4 to $6 range; pizzas are around $10; and pastas g0 from $7 10 $10. Main meat dishes stay below $14. Wine menu, with a strong offer- ing of Italian bottles, sticks to the mid-to-high teens. Fresh from an afternoon's Expo 86 marathon, we tested a Crostini Al Ginepro Con Pollo ($4.25) and the Seafood Antipasto ($5.25), one of the evening's half dozen blackboard specials, The Crostini featured strips of chicken breast and small slices of melba toast covered in a juniper berry and fried chicken-liver mix- ture.
