City warning early starters THE CITY of North Van- couver hopes that a network of local bed and breakfast ac- commodation will be organized for Expo °86, but is finding that some people are jumping the gun in get- ting into a business that is sull, at this point, illegal. One or two registry businesses have already begun to gather fees and in- formation from homeowners hoping to become involved in a bed and breakfast operation. Property and Licencing Director F. Morris will be reminded not to issue business licences to these pro- posed operations unul the prerequisites and regulations for bed and breakfast businesses and accompanying registries have been established. There is some concern that bed and breakfast opera- tions, left unchecked, could cause serious harm to existing residential rental accommodation. Ald. Stella Jo Dean made and saw passed a motion that the City put notices in newspapers warning of the il- legality of present bed and breakfast businesses. ALEXANDER GRAHAM BELL invented the telephone so that folks could talk to each other | : inexpensively, yet... 6¢ Deregulation of long distance rates in the United States has brought an end to affordable home telephones in that country, and the beginning of much higher phone bills! Consumers thought deregulation would bring lower rates. In fact, within six months it has brought metered local rates, dramatically increased costs to shops and businesses and a loss of universal home service. In Canada, the choice is still ours. Deregulation doesn’t have to happen here. In October the CRTC will decide whether to take the U.S. route or keep the Canadian telephone system intact.
