A8 - Sunday, October 2, 1983 - North Shore News Wi mailbox >><| Tougher LRB needed Dear Editor: Last month we witnessed a manifestation of the growing trend of today’s Union move- ment’s attitude of selfish job action in total disregard to the public’s inconvenience. | am referring to the entire North Vancouver transit system being shut down as a result of Metro Transit Operating Company, the Whither waterfront? OPEN LETTER TO WEST VAN COUNCIL I don’t understand why you are considering a developer’s plan for the waterfront in the 1700 block Argyle when the public has been lead to believe for at least the last ten years that waterfront will all be gradually acquired by the municipality over many years. Would you please tell me your present policy on this matter; if you have changed, or if you are likely to change in the future. 1 believe the residents must have an opportunity to decide the kind of land use for our waterfront, that it cannot be just a mayoral or council decision. Mrs. J. Barker West Vancouver EEEEEENORTH SHORE SEES SCHOOL or COMMERCE employer, deciding to transfer one bus driver from North Vancouver to. its Oakridge base of operations. This disruption came about after the employer had agreed to proceed to im- mediate arbitration in its hope to have the dispute resolved as quickly as practicable. At least the LRB did not accept the Union’s conten- tion that their walkout was legal because the transfer im- posed on the employee and his family a necessity to com- mute. Tsk, tsk. It would ap- pear that to commute to Van- couver, all the way from the North Shore, was just too much for this par..cular bus driver. Thank goodness the Labour Relations Board con- cluded that the walk-out was illegal and ordered the transit workers back to work. Un- fortunately, it took from Fri- day morning until Sunday night to obtain that ruling. If, in fact, the Labour Rela- tions Board is meant to bring about conciliation and/or stability in our labour/management rela- ions, why did it not grant an immediate order Friday mor- ning directing the men back to work? Then hold a hearing at the earliest possible con- venient time - so that the public would not be further inconvenienced. Better yet, why didn’t the Board just summarily order the Union back to work and compel them to utilize the grievance procedure in their collective Balmoral School! 3365 Mahon Ave., North Van WORD PROCESSING _REGISTER FOR CLASSES NOW MORNINGS 9 OO - Noon Monday Friday 3 weeks $145 AFTERNOONS 100 400 Monday Friday 3 weeks $145 Intake every 3 weeks tor morning and evening Classes EVENINGS 700 1000 Monday and Wednesday or Tuesday and Thursday Fee $145 For turther information call 980-2713 North and West Vancouver School Districts BANQUET ROOM FOR RENT! _ * seating for 200 «x choice of menus * parking / private & undercover * licensed * large dance floor GOLDILOCKS BANQUET CENTRE Call Donna at 987-4515 agreement. As long as the Labour Relations Board does not deal forcibly with irresponsi- ble illegal work stoppages, they will continue to occur. The tactics adopted by the Union in this case were ill thought out an disdain of the transit users. It was any number of people to be in- convenienced™ by the dis- rupted transit service while a dispute of the interpretation of a collective agreement was before the LRB. Hopefully, should such a blatantly illegal work stoppage occur in the future, the LRB will gather up its courage and summarily compel the Union to have a matter of contract interpreta- tion resolved in the form that it was Originally intended, i.e. arbitranion. Finally, on a positive note, 1 congratulate the SeaBus division employees .who, although members of the same union, would have nothing to do with = their brothers’ illegal actions. They clearly understood their responsibilities to the public and, as a result, the vital link across the harbor was maintained. John M. Parks, M.L.A.
