Each side in the por- nography dispute complains about harassment by the other. Opponents say they are plagued by threatening phone calls. Emery says the same. He says he has. ’ received hundreds of calls, “some of which have been quite frightening.” When this newspaper originally ran a news story about the opening of the store, Emery called to thank “us, saying it had started his business booming. Now hé says continued publicity has backfired on the — store, creating opposition. He talks of his fear as a result of Red Hot's store on Main Street in Vancouver being fire-bombed, and of vandalism incidents at his own store. But as to whether keeping the store open is worth the heat, Emery says he's staying. It's more than just a question of needing a job at a time when none are around, he says. “At first, I was ready to. drop out,” he admits. “But now I'm at the point where it has become quite personal... “Have they got the right to threaten me out of a job, these people opposed to the store being in operation? I don’t think so.” Store windows have been smashed and a sign outside has been vandalized, he says. “] find it, quite frightening, quite frankly,” says Emery. “That people supposedly opposed to violence would resort to such things is terrible.” Emery says his store has almost 2,500 regular rental customers on the North Shore, among whom are concerned citizens who rent the tapes to view them with the objective of censorship. He acknowledges that many of the movies are not just of explicit sex but also include violence in sexual acts. The only reason he is able to give for the com- bination of violence even in sex movies is that “we live in a violent society.” However, he considers the degree of violence to be less than in TV movies shown for family viewing evey night. As such, he questions: “Where is the standard? Is it violence, or is it sex? I just can’t see the double standard in it. € Be on schedule for your Christmas shopping this year.
