C7 - Sunday News, September 6, 1981 Gi women THINKING SLIM | was slim for a little while By JEAN NIDETCH Janet can't understand what happened. After years of self deception, she finally faced up to the fact that she’ was overweight. She joined a weight loss plan and after five long months on the food plan proudly reached her goal of 133 pounds. And there she remained — for six weeks and three days exactly. Then suddenly she began to gain, until now, several months later, she is within 10 pounds of her starting weight. She just can’t un- derstand how it could have happened. Talking to Janet, I get a clearer picture of the situation. The key lies in certain * recurrent phrases. When she talks about being fat, she is usually self- abusive. She uses phrases like, “I ate myself fat.” “T let myself go.’ But when she is talking about her bref transformation into a_ thin self, it's as if she is talking about another person: “!] was thin for a litthe while. I lucked out. Don't ask me how I did it, but anyway, it didn’t last.” Occasionally, Janet even uses the third person in talking about her slim self: “That thin me, she really looked terrific.” Now you know..... A 150-pound person _. exerts about 12,000 pounds " per square inch on the thigh bone while walking. MR. BILL DOCKSTEADER'S TOYOTA 879-6411 TILL 9 Dt *6416 Janet’s problem is that, while she is more than ready to accept responsibility for being fat, she rejects the credit of her thin self. She sees that fat self as her “real” self; the “thin” self was illusory and temporary, a fluke, a product of luck or someone else's” en- couragement. Of course, this is nonsense. As anyone who knew her at the time will confirm, Janet worked very. very hard to lose those pounds. Seven sip tg NAME ADDRESS CITY ALi ENTRANTS MUST BE 12 YEARS OF AGE OR UNDER Then why is she reluctant to accept the credit she so richly deserves? Because to accept credit means to accept responsiblilty for remaining slim after weight loss and this Janet is not ready to do. This is more understandable when we stop to realize what ac- cepting such a responsibility means. Taking it upon ourselves to eat correctly, within reasonable limits, at every meal of every day of every PH MB year for the rest of our lives. That kind of responsibility can seem awesome. But it really isn’t on a_ sensible weight-loss program that teaches you not only how to eat the proper amounts but how to enjoy that limitation. There may come a time when Janet will think highly enough of herelf to want to accept the rewards and responsiblities that come with being a slim person. For everything worth having in this world has its price, as most of us have learned. considering the alternatives carefully, for a lifetime of slimness, that price does not seem too high ‘We're alt the First prize winner will receive a complete fall wardrobe of selected items from Sears.
