ve By NOEL WRIGHT ‘page 6- November 9 1977 « ‘North Shere News Last week (as reported in the Sunday News of. November 6) the West Vancouver Electors * Association met to endorse its slate of candidates - for the November 19 elections. One came away : from the meeting still wondering exactly what to make of that curiously constituted body and its en ‘role in West Van politics. | In any given year member- © ship of the WVEA varies between 100 and 150, headed by a board of 13 directors. Association spokesmen claim the group is strictly non-pol- itical, encouraging good people to run for office at the annual municipal elections. In pursuit of this laudabie . objective the directors are busy throughout the year attending council and school . board: meetings, observing promising citizens and gen- . erally keeping tab on the — local government scene.° However, the full mem- bership normally gets to- : gether only three times a year: at a couple of all-cand- idate meetings two or three weeks before the November poling date (the second of . which formally selects the WVEA slate by membership vote); and at the annual general meeting each spring for the election of new directors. . . ‘INSTANT’? Last Wed- nesday, at the door to St. David’s Church hall new ‘instant memberships were being sold for the first half hour as a condition of entry. Numerous of those arriv- ing under the impression, apparently, that it was an open meeting turned back and went home rather than ante up. On the other -hand I have it on reliable authority that .at least two North Vancouver © residents...pres- umabiy concerned about the — political state of affairs in their neighboring municipal- ity...were among the last- minute recruits.
